Museums on Instagram

What’s a museum? And they came on Social Media?

Museum is a place where art and culture are shared and enhanced.

They exist since the dawn of time… the etymology of the museum came from the Greek word museion, the temple name dedicates to the muses in Athene. But we considered that the real creation of museum came from Egypt (nearby 280 century BC), with the magnificent library, observatory, studies rooms, amphitheatre and even botanical gardens, placed in the heart of the Alexandria Palace of King Ptolemy. But enough history.

In our culture museum is everywhere and it was considered like a well of knowledge. But for many people, since a few years, museums have become obsolete. Many children see this place like something old and boring. With the spread of this vision, museum have arrived on Instagram, to twist their image and became more attractive to the Generation Z. I choose to only treat Instagram because it’s a perfect example of how museum recreate their image, and it’s also one of the biggest Social Media nowadays.

Museum recreates and rethinks their image on social media.

To illustrate my comments, I’m going to take example of French museum, especially those which takes place in the capital. Paris is known to be “une ville musée” (a museum city), because they’re everywhere in the city, in every shape, with every artistic movement.

The example I will use is the Louvre, obviously. The Louvre is one of the most famous museums in the world, but like everything, to keep his place it has to be on Instagram. The first thing to notice is the photograph used for the profile picture; it’s the “Joconde”. One of the most famous paintings in the all world. The museum also has organised his feed in a special way; the paintings (this is most present art in this museum with sculpture) are presented like if people, on the painting, where real people. The museum also set up IGTV, the latest update function on Instagram, where people, who work over there, talk and explain fun facts or goals of the museum.

To be clear Instagram gave many possibilities to theses temples of cultures to create new image and new opportunities to see them in other way.

Down below you can see a picture and a screen record of the Louvre’s Instagram.
