Fashion through Social Media ; Art or Not?

What is fashion? How it can be an art? this is the questions I was asking myself. Something is sure fashion IS NOT an art… but for many stylist fashions is a way to express themselves and share ideas and visions. An example where fashion is purely art; Jean-Paul Gautier one of the most famous French couturier in the world. He actually made his last fashion runway at the Fashion Week Paris 2020, and it was his art in all his glory. So, in a way Fashion can be an art.

Nowadays Fashion became more and more an art, because Social Media reveal new fashion designers, who see themselves as artist, and social media give this opportunity to make them artist and say to the world “I’m an artist”.

Therefore, I wanted to show a Norwegian artist/ fashion designer; FREDRIK TJÆRANDSEN. He has created big balloons which in reality are… dresses ! Down below a screen record of his Instagram.

There are many ways to see fashion as Art ; most of the time when you thought about this two terms together (Art / Fashion) you image eccentric clothes, like Lady Gaga and her meat dress or Katy Perry and her Burger Dress at the Met Gala 2020 (the theme was Camp). But I think the Art of Fashion, especially when you share it on Social Media, can be simpler, extravagance isn’t the only respond to categorise Fashion as art.

The Art of Fashion can be seen at a play or dance show, because even if I see fashion as practical (you dress everyday with your own style), I also see it as an expression of your own vision and your ideas of how your body can be highlight, and which part you want to show. Obviously, seasons give us hint of how to dress up, but with our society’s evolution people wrap up as they want and how they want. And with this evolution people begun to develop their own style and share it with Social Media.

Nowadays Social Media started to take a big place in our lives and in our style; Influencers gave advice and what you have to wear… But even if Social Media gave this opportunity to put fashion as Art, Social Media make it less unique and less magical sometimes...
