The cinema through social media

Updated: Apr 12, 2020

A long time ago, at a time that many will never know, the promotion of a film summed up in a few television sets, a poster campaign, TV spots, and without forgetting the timeless trailers.

We all have on day, dreamed of meeting our favorite movie characters.

Social networks make a character popular, but also surf on that popularity.

But the social networks in the cinema also made possible to create discussion about a film and to publicize it even before its release on screen.

Specialized film sites are no longer the only places of information and to exchange. Now, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have become real micro-blogs in which the public shares opinions, photos, trailers and news on topics which interest them.

But social networks also allow producers and actors to promote different things about their film, and to put it forward.

On Twitter we have: comments, moods of the day, information, anecdotes and photos of the film shoot. This social network allows us to be as close to the movie stars as possible. If they tweet regularly, we can almost find out in real time what they do and where they are…

We almost get the impression that sometimes the boundary between private and public, man and actor, no longer really exists.

Video format is also the future of online advertising.

Every distributor or production company is very present on the Youtube network.

Their accounts are full of official trailers, exclusive extracts, and videos by theme and gender.

But there are also the famous Instagram interviews

The Facebook page of the film “The New Adventures of Aladdin”, for example, has nearly 300,000 fans. A rare number for a French movie, but which guaranteed the success of this movie in cinema room, well before its release.

Now most of the films have their own Instagram or Facebook account.

Films like “Marvel” are promoted for example several months or even years before their release. The release schedule of the films is already known until 2022 even if we do not necessarily know which superhero will be put forward.

The shooting of the “Joker” (played by Joaquin Phoenix) was scheduled in cinema room for February 2019. Some photos of the shooting in New York and of the actor under the guise

of the Joker flocked on Twitter and quickly created easy and reusable advertising for the studios and the press to promote this film event which is came out almost a year later.

Social media can boost the notoriety of a film because it gives a lot of magnitude.

Also, influencers, through social networks, promote movies well before their release and allow them to be talked about as much as possible.

To conclude, this phenomenon of social networks is therefore very impactful in this field of art that is cinema.
