Many artists use social media to promote what they do as a storefront, and we know that street art has been helping a lot by instagram for its democratization.
For now, Instagram is considered the best social media, the more used.
In fact, street artist's goal is to show his work to as many people as possible and that’s why he does his art in public, in busy cities and streets.
Nowadays social media allow people to see wh
at happen everywhere in the world, we don’t need to go out to meet people or to discover places.
And as a consequence, social media are now the busiest places where there are the most people, so street art can be as visible as in the street on social media, see more. The advantage that we have on a social network is that the artist’s work continues to exist as long as the post isn’t deleted. In contrast, the real work and not his picture, can be erased from a wall or the place where it is.
So, social media highlight street art and offer many benefits like more visibility and a sustainability over time.
But on the other hand, it can also be seen that street art is used to denounce our dependence on social media. For example, the californian artist “Above” wrote and drew on a wall in Copenhagen to incite us to think about our use of social media.
The fact is that our routine is completely polluted by social networks that’s why Above wrote some punchlines about each social media (twitter, instagram, facebook…) to make us realize that it’s omnipresent.
But Above isn’t the only artist who uses of street art to reveal the dark ways of using social networks.
“Mister Thoms”, an italian artist also painted a wall to show how human can be obsessed by social media and how he can be looking for a maximum of likes.
There, the artist’s goal is to show us that people become machines and that they are dehumanized.
So, we can say that social media is a controversial topic from the point of view of street art because on one hand it gives the opportunity to have more visibility for artist’s work. But on the other side, not all artists are completely conquered by social media that’s why some of them use their street art to prevent the bad side of these technologies.
